Engendered, a “trans-national arts and human rights organization”, put on its annual I-View South Asian film festival in New York City this past week (September 18-26, 2010) to packed crowds and much acclimation. For the past three years, Engendered has been focusing on bringing attention to sensitive and complex issues, such as women’s rights, domestic abuse, gender inequity, sexual orientation, and minority and health rights in the South Asian community.
It is perhaps one of the greatest tragedies of Hindi film viewers that any seemingly intelligent film, one that invites its audience to use their minds and embark on a truly engaging journey, are immediately branded as a form of parallel cinema, also known as being ‘offbeat’ or on occasion referred to as ‘art films’.
