The Times of India
Appearing in his first Hollywood movie, Amitabh Bachchan makes the most of his small role in the much-anticipated film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The film soared to the top of the box office in its opening weekend, raking in an impressive $51 million dollars.
Amitabh originally met director Baz Luhrmann on his visit to India a couple of years ago. In a Q&A, with TIME he said, “A year or so later I got another message about a film that he’s doing… and he said, you know, Amitabh, I’m making Great Gatsby, and there’s a small role, I know it’s not worth your while to do something like this but I’d be very delighted if you could.”
Amitabh plays Meyer Wolfsheim, Gatsby’s crooked associate. The film also stars Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. Though his character does not get much of the spotlight in this film, Amitabh says the experience made it all worth it.
“I just enjoyed the professional atmosphere…following very professional ethics — accountability, marketing, distribution, contracts with artists. And that’s what I like best about working with Baz Luhrmann and in a Hollywood production.” The Great Gatsby will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th.
