Freida Pinto Visits Slum Dwellers in Mumbai For ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign
As part of her Global Ambassador role for Plan International’s Because I am a Girl campaign, The Slumdog Millionaire star visited slum dwellers in her hometown.
The program aims to tackle gender inequality and help girls and boys complete their education and achieve their full potential. Pinto previously travelled to Sierra Leone to witness firsthand how an investment in girls can transform a community.
After spending time at a specialist nursery for young children from slum areas, she said, “What added to the uplifting stories of girls trying to better their own lives, was the willingness of the young boys to help these girls enjoy the same opportunities as themselves.” Pinto also spent time in children centers in three other slum areas.
Chief Executive of Plan UK, Tanya Barron, praised the visit, saying, “With the help of Freida, and men, women and children who believe in gender equality, we can help girls move themselves from poverty to opportunity.” Pinto will continue to visit centers worldwide that help millions of the world’s poorest girls complete their education.
