Hawaii Elects America’s First Ever Hindu Congresswoman
Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, who will be the first ever practicing Hindu to the US House of Representatives, will take the oath of office over the Bhagavad Gita.
She was born to two conservative Hawaii politicians and voluntarily served on a 12-month tour of duty with the Hawaii National Guard. Gabbard also broke history back in 2007 when she became the first woman to become a “distinguished honor graduate” at the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at the Alabama Military Academy.
Gabbard told the Huffington Post her faith helped her through her tour in Iraq, saying,” First thing in the morning and the last thing at night, I meditated upon the fact that my essence was spirit, not matter, that I was not my physical body, and that I didn’t need to worry about death because I knew that I would continue to exist and I knew that I would be going to God.” She also hopes her faith will help towards the U.S. build a closer working relationship with India.
