Our Favorite South Asian Kickstarter Campaigns

Riyaaz Qawwali

More and more South Asians are using Kickstarter, the world’s largest funding platform to fund their projects. Remember when we wrote about Dirty Paki Lingerie last year, the one woman show that set out to dispel stereotypes about Pakistani women and address taboo issues in our society today? Aizzah Fatima, the writer and performer launched a Kickstarter campaign to help cover the costs of bringing the play to Edinburgh, England.

We’re excited to announce that Dirty Paki Lingerie reached their Kickstarter goal of $10,000 today.

Aizzah Fatima is not the first South Asian performer to use Kickstarter. We just got word that Riyaaz Qawwali is already two-thirds of the way to reaching their $15,000 goal. We like the idea behind Riyaaz Qawwali because they “aim to use this genre of music transcend religious, spiritual, and cultural boundaries in a show of singular spiritual experience.”

We love how more and more South Asian artists are rocking social media and crowd funding to finance their campaigns. These are just a couple that have come across the Divanee.com radar. If you have more, please do share them with us in our comments section below.
