My Oh Maiyet! New Label Fuses Fashion With Philanthropy

Nestled between Givenchy and Céline in the Barneys New York display windows on Madison Ave., a new label is committed to one-of-a-kind design as well as global consciousness.

Maiyet is the brainchild of co-founder and human rights lawyer Paul van Zyl, who teamed up with Kristy Caylor, the president of Los Angeles-based luxury brand Band of Outsiders, to create a high fashion label that would fuse their passions for couture and ethical action. The Maiyet team travelled to eight countries across five continents to find the world’s best artisans and combine their old-world practices with new age design. For their Spring/Summer 2012 collection, the journey began in Jaipur as they explored the work of the region’s finest weavers, embroiderers, and block-printers.

Now, halfway across the globe, the artisans’ exquisite, centuries-old techniques are proudly showcased on one of the most fashionable thoroughfares in the world. Staying true to the founders’ commitment to advocacy for global rights and prosperity, Maiyet donates a percentage of its proceeds to non-profit organizations in each of these countries that help train and support local artisans. Check out a few of our favorite pieces from Maiyet’s debut collection.
