It was a tragic end to Valentine’s Day in Dhaka on Tuesday, when two teenagers jumped to their death from a cell phone tower in an apparent suicide pact.

Mithu Mollah, 16, and Soud Sheikh, 17, hailed from neighboring villages and were initially involved in a secret love affair. Once their romance became public, Mollah’s family forced her to marry a man twice her age against her will.

But the young couple would not stay apart for long–following two months of marriage, Mollah secretly returned to her village to meet Sheikh. The boy then called his brother to say the two planned on killing themselves on Valentine’s Day “to stay together forever”.

The suicide took place in Gopalganj, a small town just southwest of Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. The majority-Muslim country has yet to embrace love affairs, which have become far more commonplace in the larger cities of South Asian counterparts India and Pakistan.

Mollah and Sheikh tied their hands together with a scarf before plunging to their death. They were in 10th grade.
