Man Fights for the Right to Charge Locals for Shark Viewing

Qasim Khan didn’t know what he was getting into when he visited the Karachi fish market yesterday. After purchasing the carcass of an endangered whale shark for $2,200, Khan charged several thousand visitors 22 cents to see the creature he bought from local Karachi fishermen.
Khan got into a row with Pakistani authorities Thursday who argued that “shark viewing” should be free to the public. Khan resisted and kept his shark under a giant green cloth to hide the dead fish from non-paying eyes. Locals who came to see the shark after seeing headlines like “All is ‘whale’” and “‘Moby Dick’ comes to town ahead of Karachi Literature Festival” were disappointed at not being able to catch a viewing.
Experts believe that the fishing crew fed the shark diesel oil in order to capture and kill it, according to GEO TV.
Former Karachi Fish Harbour Authority director and marine expert Dr. Moazzam Khan informed GEO TV that the whale shark is an endangered species and that no laws are in place to protect it.
