10 Famous Pakistanis

Recent music has long evolved to more of a multicultural beat than simply the Beatles’ use of sitars and tablas in the 60s.

As part of our Top 10 theme this month, we at Divanee thought we’d explore the world of pop culture and see which celebrities add a little ‘Pakistani’ to the mix. How many did you know about? Any surprises? Who else can you add to the mix?

1. Jessica Lucas

This 24-year old, half-Pakistani/half-Haitian Canadian actress is currently playing the role of Riley Richmond on the revamped series, Melrose Place. Playing a hot-to-trot elementary school teacher with commitment issues, Lucas isn’t new to the scene of tween-television. She had a recurring role on the new 90210 as an undercover cop posing as a student, and prior to that she starred as Bekka Lawrence in the Canadian-based teen show Edgemont. CSI fans may have seen her play Ronnie Lake for a four-episode arc or perhaps you may remember her as Lily Ford in the 2008 JJ Abrams film Cloverfield. Lucas’ dream project is “something in the musical realm.” Having achieved box-office success on the big screen and now small, the only place left for this artist to breakthrough is on Broadway.

I don’t think most of those people even know they’re Pakistani (or identify themselves as such).

The only one who genuinely traces his heritage as Pakistani, and is known to not just the Pakistani community but the wider Muslim and South Asian communities, is the boxer Amir Khan. He is the man.

  • Mr. B

One person you guys missed is Dilshad Vadsaria, who is on the ABC Family show Greek. She was born in Karachi to a Parsi family. I’m sure there’s others too, but not a bad job with the list.

Wow. I didn’t know about “yasmeen.” It’s too bad her dad was ousted like that; what his daughter does is her own choice and business. I’m imagining he was sad enough about it, and then he gets shunned for it too. … But I can’t say I’m surprised.

  • Mutahir

Who writes this stuff?! “Where Yasmeen Ghauri may be a success story most Pakistani parents fear, Huma Abedin is probably their dream child.” Right. Most Pakistani parents I know dream of their daughter growing up to marry a Jewish man. An avowed Zionist at that. Haha. Especially coming from a religious family as she does. How about just a little bit of research? Thank. P.S. not saying that I agree with the sentiment, but let’s be real, Pakistani parents don’t want their daughters marrying Jewish guys, Congressmen or not.

  • Stever

Wow, who writes the stuff for your magazine. You fail to mention top class doctors, poets, and media insiders, and world-known musicians who are in Pakistan.. interesting u mention about either half pakistanis or distant pakistanis living abroad who aren’t in touch with the country in any form shape, or fashion.

A great ever recorded Pop song in UK top 40.

A most “revealing” list — in more ways than one. As someone in the “twilight” zone (not in the movie sense), it gave me an insight into the preferences of my grandchildren’s generation and what the future of some of them may be like. Although it may be considered a “fringe” list, it also indicates the shape of the mainstream to come. May the new generation have interesting times.
